A couple years ago after Autodesk purchased short form video creation app Socialcam, my co-founder Jereme Monteau and I asked each other why Socialcam out of all the other video creation apps? Was Socialcam the best fit for Autodesk’s strategic needs? It may very well have been the best fit for Autodesk’s needs, but we wondered if Autodesk acted with a full understanding of the video creation category.
At the time, Socialcam was leveraging Facebook’s open graph integration to more or less game their growth curve by filling Facebook’s feed with their videos. This led to all sorts of hype and ultimately the sale of Socialcam to Autodesk before Facebook turned off the capacity to game their open graph.
When we started Venture Scanner, we wanted to address the question we asked of “why Socialcam out of all the other video creation apps?” And “was Socialcam the best fit for Autodesk’s strategic needs?” We wondered if Autodesk was aware at the time of the deal of all the other video creation apps and how they stacked up against one another. We wanted to create a service that exposed all the companies in any category and provided the right insights so companies like Autodesk could make the best decisions. And ultimately, enable the right company that was the best fit for Autodesk’s strategic needs to win the deal. Thus was born Venture Scanner.
